Oregon Bonsai

Originating as a field growing operation which took shape in 1996, Oregon Bonsai has quickly become a well known name not only in Pacific Northwest bonsai circles, but also throughout the United States and abroad. Owned and operated by Randy Knight, Oregon Bonsai is the foremost resource for world class collected bonsai material and field grown stock in North America. Driven by tenacity and a passion for what he does, Randy is turning meager beginnings into massive ripples in the bonsai world.

When Oregon Bonsai was created 15 years ago it would have been difficult for anyone to see the potential in such a grassroots operation. Designed to produce quality material he couldn’t find elsewhere at an affordable price, Randy’s operation was much like many other backyard nurseries throughout the U.S. Even from the beginning, however, one thing clearly delineated Oregon Bonsai from its synonymous counterparts; that being the ambition of its proprietor to constantly produce something better.

In 2003 Randy decided to compliment his variety of field grown stock with collected trees from the mountains. Pulling on years of knowledge in a variety of fields, Randy’s success as a yamadori collector was almost immediate. Using the entire United States as his backyard, he became adept at locating collecting grounds that would yield the highest quality material with the best survivability rate possible. Randy recognized the value of the rare conditions in which world class collectable trees grow and became dedicated to preserving and conscientiously utilizing this resource which is reflected in his consistent 90% success rate.

Only now, in his 8th year of collecting is Randy truly beginning to gain the recognition he deserves for his effort and dedication to pursuing quality both in the creation of field-grown trees and the collection of yamadori. Bonsai artists throughout the U.S., Europe, and even Japan have taken notice of Oregon Bonsai and his material is now in very high demand. True to his roots however, Randy hasn’t taken the recent exposure as a sign of success and is instead using it as a source of motivation. Recent trips to Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim have all provided opportunities for his aesthetic eye to develop and improve; only increasing the quality of the trees Randy has to offer.

Randy Knight and Oregon Bonsai are proud to be doing their part to improve the quality of American bonsai and are looking forward to their continued search for higher quality trees and improved field-grown stock for years and hopefully decades to come.
