bristlecone pine no. 2
Pinus aristata
Height 40" Width 41"
This composition began with two individual Bristlecone Pines, both collected by Todd Schlafer. On their own, each tree held interesting potential but together, something more powerful emerged. When trees share like characteristics shaped by the same environmental influence, pairing them can transport the viewer to a place beyond the container. That’s what happened here.
These two trees came together to reflect the rugged, wind-swept conditions of the high alpine environment. Their placement on the slab captured not just their individual form, but the broader context of their existence—harsh exposure, resilience, and time.
The planting was styled during a live stream, shortly after our 2021 Mirai in the Wild expedition to Windy Ridge. The inspiration was immediate and direct. Everything about this composition points back to that experience: the exposed roots gripping stone, the gnarled movement of trunks shaped by unrelenting wind, and the sparse branching dictated by survival in extreme conditions. The aesthetic decisions made during styling were rooted in what we observed on that ridge.
As this composition continues to develop, it will go through multiple iterations, each one refining the story, increasing the expression of age, and strengthening the narrative of endurance. Over time, this containerized landscape will communicate centuries of existence shaped by elemental forces, told through the lens of just a few years of bonsai practice.
This is where bonsai moves beyond technique. It becomes a visual language, one that speaks of ecology, geography, and time. It’s not just the cultivation of a tree. It’s the embodiment of the natural world.
